MySQL is and always has been the MySQL database created by TCX DataKonsult AB. It is mainly targeted at the web-tier for the moment.
MaxDB is a rebranded version of SAP's database, SAP DB (which was itself based on ADABAS). MaxDB usage and administration is comparable to Oracle, DB2, and the like; it's built for 24x7 usage and large scale applications (like SAP enterprise apps).
