ERR_SHUTDOWN and Connection Refused errors

Hi,
I created several MaxDB databases a couple years ago and until last week
was able to use them just fine through last week.  Now when I start up
the script that connects the databases I get the following error:

>db_online
ERR
-24895,ERR_SHUTDOWN: shutdown of database occured
-71,connection broken

If I try to connect to the database using DBVisualizer, I get the
following error:

An error occured while establishing the connection.
  Type: com.sap.dbtech.jdbc.exceptions.JDBCDriverException   Error
Code: -10899   SQL State:
Message:
SAP DBTech JDBC: Cannot connect to jdbc:sapdb://localhost/MILHCPDB
[Cannot connect to host localhost [Connection refused: connect], -813.].

I made no changes to these databases or their scripts, so it must be a
system problem.  Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks,
Marilyn
