Migrating SAP DB 7.4 ASCII to 7.6 Unicode

Migrating SAP DB 7.4 ASCII to 7.6 Unicode

Hi,

as mentioned in my last mail, we want to upgrade our old SAP DB 7.4 database
systems to MaxDB 7.6.

Our source system is a SAP DB 7.4.3.27, 32 Bit, ASCII. The destination
system is a MaxDB 7.6.0.33, 64 Bit and we'd like to run it in Unicode mode.

We tried to recover a full backup into the new system. But this wasn't
possible because the backup was made with an ASCII instance and we tried to
recover it in an Unicode instance.

Then we recovered it in an instance, where we defined _UNICODE NO. This
worked very well but it was ASCII. And this parameter isn't changeable
anymore :-(

But I remembered that our SAP systems made this step (convert the catalog
from ASCII to Unicode). And then I found the (rather undocumented) function
db_migratecatalog, which has to be executed in OFFLINE state. It finished
its work and voila: _UNICODE YES.

Is this the (secure) way to convert a database or should we use a different
strategy?

bye
Chris
