Install error with mysql

Install error with mysql

2006-08-08       - By Patrick Holkenbrink

We have a product on Windows XP and Windows 2000 which uses mysql.  We
need to install the ODBC driver.  Our installer uses InstallShield 12.0
and does the installation of the ODBC driver 99% of the time.  Usually,
it loads the driver, and runs the setup fine.

However, on occasion and most often with clean, new Windows XP Installs,
the install fails with the message:

Error 1918.Error installing ODBC driver MySQL ODBC 3.51 Driver, ODBC
error 13: Could not load the setup or translator library.  Verify that
the file MYSQL ODBC 3.51 Driver exists and that you can access it.

What we have found is when this error occurs, if we have the user
install the ODBC driver from your site, the installation will work from
then on.  I do not know what the msi package does differently that we
are doing.  In addition, I looked at your zip install and see that it
appears to be doing we we and InstallShield are doing with the exception
that we do not run the myodbc3i.exe file.  The InstallShield sets the
.ini file and runs the setup as far as I can tell.

Will running the myodbc3i.exe file instead of letting InstallShield do
the work solve our problem?

Is there some other step that the msi is doing to an machine that I am
not aware of?

Thanks for your help,
