myodbc without unixODBC on a unix platform

Hi folks,
I have very basic question.

Can we use myodbc without any driver manager on a unix system ? ( i
mean linking the application directly with myodbc instead of unixODBC
libs) ?

The reason i am asking this question, i am unable to build shared
library for our unix-like system ( SFU on windows). The shared library
which i created manually from the mysql-connector source is crashing
with a core dump from some (illegal instructions).

TIA,
sunil
